Saudi Arabien erhält eine neue Staatsairline …
Saudi Arabien will stark in den Tourismus einsteigen und hat in den letzten Jahren ein riesiges Aufbauprojekt dafür laufen. Die eigentlich staatliche Airline Saudia hat man bereits mit neuen Flugzeugen aufgeblasen, aber man hat bei Saudia noch immer eine in veralteten Strukturen verharrende Airline. Mit einer zweiten staatlichen Airline mit dem klingenden Namen Riyadh Air will man den Airlines der Golfstaaten Konkurrenz machen. Nicht von ungefähr wurde für das Projekt der ehemalige CEO von Etihad Tony Douglas ausgewählt.

His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Prime Minister and Chairman of the Public Investment Fund (“PIF”), announced today the establishment of “Riyadh Air,” a PIF wholly owned company. The new national carrier will leverage Saudi Arabia’s strategic geographic location between the three continents of Asia, Africa and Europe, enabling Riyadh to become a gateway to the world and a global destination for transportation, trade, and tourism.
Riyadh Air will be chaired by His Excellency Yasir Al-Rumayyan, Governor of PIF, while Tony Douglas, who brings more than 40 years of experience in the aviation, transportation and logistics industries, has been appointed Chief Executive Officer. The airline’s senior management will include Saudi and international expertise.

Riyadh Air aims to enhance customers’ journey while connecting them to over 100 destinations around the world by 2030; through offering an exceptional experience with an authentic, warm Saudi hospitality at its heart.
The airline will provide tourists from around the world the opportunity to visit Saudi Arabia’s cultural and natural attractions. Riyadh Air will also serve as a catalyst for the Saudi National Transport and Logistics Strategy and the National Tourism Strategy by increasing air transport options, raising cargo capacity and, in turn, growing international passenger traffic.
The establishment of Riyadh Air is part of PIF’s strategy to unlock the capabilities of promising sectors that can help drive the diversification of the local economy. It will enable a more financially resilient aviation ecosystem in Saudi Arabia, supporting the industry’s global competitiveness in line with Vision 2030.”

Sehr spannende Geschichte. Es wird halt doch einige Überzeugungsarbeit brauchen, um internationalen Passagiere einen Flug über Saudi Arabien schmackhaft zu machen. Wenn sie wie bei Saudia auch Non-LGBT-Friendly sind, keinen Alk ausschenken, die banalsten Kinderserien im Entertainment verpixeln, Horror-Transfers an den Airports laufen haben, dann werden die Leute weiterhin Emirates, Etihad oder Qatar wählen. Dann können sie wie bei Saudia sich nur mehr über den Preis einen Teil des Kuchens sichern.

Warum nicht den bestehenden Carrier auf Vordermann bringen? Irgendwie gibt es aus SA in letzter Zeit gefühlt ständig irgendwelche “Ankündigungen” und “Werbung” für irgendwelche irrwitzigen “Projekte”… aber was wird am Ende dabei wirklich herumkommen? Mir fehlt der Glaube. Ich werde es wohl nie aus erster Hand erfahren, da ich dort nie Urlaub machen würde. Insofern, viel Spaß euch allen, die es da hinzieht.
Ich glaube diese super-staatlichen Firmen wie Saudia sind nur extrem schwer zu reformieren. Gefühlt arbeiten ja richtig nur die GastarbeiterInnen. Diesen Sumpf wird man nicht richtig trockenlegen können und dann verstehe ich die Neugründung schon irgendwie.
Bei Saudia sehe ich einen zu großen Spagat. Auf der einen Seite wollen sie günstig Muslime nach Mekka bringen, dann ihre Gastarbeiter herumfliegen und dann sollen auch die internationalen Reisenden da unterwegs sein. Da sehe ich irgendwie eine zu große Zielgruppe. Vielleicht macht das schon Sinn, Luxusairline Riyadh Air und der Rest tuckert mit Saudia herum.
